You sometimes still hear Trump supporting Republicans pointless and nonsensical claim that there was no investigation before Trump’s second impeachment trial.

With all the first hand evidence they had, and provided at the impeachment trial, what further investigation was needed?

With the evidence they had, they proved that Trump should be held accountable for his role in inciting the events of January 6th.

Listen to how Trump and his supporting Republicans are "now" trying to present what happened on Jan 6th, “They were peaceful people, these were great people ... the love in the air, I've never seen anything like it”, compare that to McConnell’s description.

Here is part of the transcript from Republican Mitch McConnell’s conclusion right after the trial.

”January 6th was a disgrace. American citizens attacked their own government. They use terrorism to try to stop a specific piece of domestic business they did not like. Fellow Americans beat and bloodied our own police. They stormed the center floor. They tried to hunt down the Speaker of the House. They built a gallows and chatted about murdering the vice president. They did this because they’d been fed wild, falsehoods by the most powerful man on earth because he was angry. He lost an election. Former President Trump’s actions preceded the riot or a disgraceful dereliction of duty. The House accused the former president of quote “Incitement”. That is a specific term from the criminal law. Let me just put that aside for a moment and reiterate something I said weeks ago. There’s no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. No question about it.”

Now we all want an investigation to see if "criminal charges" should be brought against Trump, and the same Republicans are doing all they can to insure that such an investigation doesn't take place.

Rep. Jim Jordan said the congressional 1/6 investigation will be "Impeachment 3.0". He just telegraphed that he had intended to do what he did in the two impeachments: vociferously defend Trump.

    TDSers,

I watched the Trump rally and the Trump speech on January 6. You didn't.

There were many THOUSANDS at the rally. The spirit of the gathering resembled a love in, not a political protest.

Nothing that Trump said in his speech could have incited a reasonable person to riot.

The reality that a minute fraction of the humongous crowd that attended the rally participated in what happened at the Capitol proves that Trump's speech didn't provoke the riot.

Now, if you can unearth a secret conspiracy that links Trump to the events at the Capitol, have at it!

I think Trump is despicable and I despise him as much as the next man but, as far as I can tell, you have to be deranged to think that Trump's criminally responsible for what happened.

    But, then, you are.

Therein lies the problem. The people who were there on January 6th were not reasonable persons. They were incited to simply show up for the certification of election which every other time has been a perfunctory formality.

    Really?

The House accused the former president of quote “Incitement”.” “That is a specific term from the criminal law. Let me just put that aside for a moment and reiterate something I said weeks ago. There’s no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. No question about it.”

    Who said that?

“Addison Mitchell McConnell III an American politician. A member of the Republican Party, he has served as the senior United States senator from Kentucky since 1985, and as Senate Minority Leader since 2021. He previously served as Senate Majority Leader from 2015 to 2021, and as Minority Leader from 2007 to 2015”

Should a president be found guilty in an impeachment trial of the crimes for which Trump was charged?… Donald John Trump engaged in high Crimes and Misdemeanors by inciting violence against the Government of the United States…Of course! Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution prohibits any person who has "engaged in insurrection or rebellion against" the United States from "hold[ing] and office ... under the United States.' In his conduct while President of the United States”. ← Note the last sentence Trump was in office when he committed the crime.

Why didn’t the Republican senate choose to convict him? Because Trump, at the time they voted was no longer in office, which was of course a farce and a sham excuse.

Trump was indeed guilty of the charges brought against him. McConnell tried to justify his own shameful vote by claiming Trump should be charged in a criminal court. Now the Republicans are trying to prevent that.

    isle,

You wanna quote the places in the speech that incited an overthrow of the American government!!!!!?

    Bahahahaha!

  7. by islander on July 23, 2021 6:32 am
Do you really believe that the American government was overthrown, or that the what we saw take place on Jan 6th came about because of something said in a single speech? No one else believes that kind of nonsense.

  8. by HatetheSwamp on July 23, 2021 7:32 am
It seems to me that you Trumpaphobes have two hopes here.

Either connect the speech to the riot or reveal a heretofore secret conspiracy.

    G'luck!

I expect the investigation won't be so much about how some people actively fomented the insurrection, but on how some people were derelict in their duties and passively allowed it to happen. For example, who had the authority to call in the National Guard to put a stop to the riot?

That would probably be constructive but I doubt it.
