Trump's sacrilegious Bible scam. If people don't recognize Trump as a phony now, they never will.

Driver goes around rail crossing arms, hit by train in Surprise

SURPRISE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) - A driver in Surprise was injured when his SUV was hit by a train Saturday evening. Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office officials say the senior citizen tried to drive around the lowered railroad crossing arms at the intersection of R.H. Johnson Boulevard, which is near Loop 303, and Grand Avenue around 5:30 p.m. when his SUV was hit by a train. The man was the only one in the SUV. Rescuers had to pry open the roof to get him out of the crumpled SUV. He was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

R.H. Johnson Boulevard is closed in both directions between Grand Avenue and Tanglewood Drive as the investigation takes place.

Maybe he was attempting suicide. Or maybe he has a degenerative brain disease.

I just got off the phone with my 96-year old mom who, like every time I talk to her, which is weekly, went on and on about wanting to die. Today she mentioned that she thought about asking her doc if he could prescribe her a euthanasia drug, but decided against it.

So while I can't laugh at that that news piece, I don't think you're a terrible person.

I laughed more that the headline than the actual report. The town name of "SURPRISE" was just too appropriate---unless, as you suggest, it was intentional.

I figured that why you chuckled. I've just been kinda depressed thinking about my mom.

That is depressing about your mom. Depressing because she's obviously unhappy with life. I am sure she takes some comfort in your phone calls.

My younger brother and his wife visited her last weekend, which really lifted her spirits, but the problem is that her assisted living facility is a 3-hour drive from her closest (in distance) child, which is my younger brother. Do she doesn't get many visitors. On top of that, most of her closest friends she and my dad made over the years after they retired there in the mid 1980s are dead.

Her best years are long gone and she misses my dad who died 7 years ago. On top of all of that, she has sciatica, and like most elderly people, she has bowel problems which take up a lot of her time and energy and which severely limit taking part in any activities away from her apartment.

She has nothing to live for. As my dad often said, "Getting old is gross". And we're next. This is what we have to look forward to.

    Donna,
Again I offer information that probably won't cheer you up.

A few years ago I was running several miles along the Pacific Crest trail with my friend and doctor when we started talking about our mortality. I mentioned that while I am very physically fit and live a healthy lifestyle so I have the probability of longer than average lifespan, that doesn't change my odds of having a slow degenerative decline in my final years.

My friend said that besides Oregon's Death with Dignity law, he mentioned the "virtues" of bedsores. Bedsores, left untreated, kill elderly patients relatively quickly. Also my friend has spoken of pneumonia which he and other doctors refer to as the "old man's best friend" as it ends the life of many suffering with cancer and other terminal diseases.

Probably the most painless way to die is a bullet to the back of the head. It's a little messy though.

Speaking of the horrors of getting old, about 20 minutes ago I got a text message from my cousin informing me that they had to put her mom (my aunt, who I think is about 90) in hospice because she lost the ability to swallow well and developed aspiration pneumonia. She asked me to notify my mom, who's her mom's sis-in-law.
