Now is a great time for Biden to halt Russian oil imports even though it will increase gas prices.

Less than ten percent of America's oil comes from Russia. The Biden administration possible with an agreement from Congress should ban the importation of Russian oil. Even though it will likely mean that the price of a gallon of gas could increase by ten percent or so.

The result of a oil price increase is that we will more seriously consider alternative forms of energy. It might cause some people to drive ten percent less. People will check to sure their tires are properly inflated and their cars tuned properly.

As much whining as you hear about the price of a gallon of gas, you might not realize that US gas prices are among the lowest in the world. Out of all the countries in which statistics are available, including all the leading industrial countries, Americans pay less for a gallon of gas that 80% of them. The countries that pay less than us are are mostly authoritarian regimes and/or those with state-owned oil companies.

From a political point of view it's a perfect time to shut off Russian oil. Biden can rightly blame Putin for the price increase while appealing to America's patriotism.

A lot of Americans are looking for a way to support Ukraine. The minor sacrifice of not buying Russian oil is a very good way to not just show support but to hurt Russia.

Being that inflation by a wide margin is the #1 concern of Americans, I think Republicans in Washington would consider that a great plan.

That you progressives are so in love with high gas prices is a constant source of amusement to me.

No one I know is doing extra driving. How do propose people drive ten percent less? Skip a day of work every other week?

I agree with you on your bottom line. Now is the time to stop buying Russian oil. Doing so will hurt Russia far more than us. And, we'll be discontinuing our financial support of the slaughter of Ukrainians.

You aren't looking. Stand outside that supermarket where you used to work. Count how many people buy one or two items and hop in their car to transport that half gallon of milk or loaf of bread to their home. I give my wife credit for consolidating grocery shopping. When she shops she loads up the trunk.

Very few people optimize their driving trips. Nearly all of us could do better.

  4. by HatetheSwamp on March 5, 2022 12:39 pm

My sense of the people who make unnecessary trips to the supermarket, as a matter of course, is that many of them are lonely and happy to chat with someone with a familiar face who's taken the time to know them by name. I'd guess there are a few million of those people around...and paying an extra 10, 20, 30 percent for the gas to take a 5 mile round trip wouldn't discourage them.

Here's how the Dems will lose politically when gas prices rise because we cease purchasing oil from Russia. GOPs will demand that the Flatulent Fool restart the Keystone xl pipeline and do everything possible to make the US a net exporter of energy...as we were before "that feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap" worked his magic.

This is why Joe's smoke filled room handlers are resisting the Russian oil thing.

I'm certain that the GOPs already have the scripts for those ads written.

Additionally, many people could work a day or two a week from their homes using Zoom, etc. to connect with their co-workers. Because of Covid, people are already use to it.

During WWII there was gasoline rationing. Americans were limited to three or five gallons per week---that's when cars didn't get such great gas mileage--- depending on their classification (usually based on their work).

Btw, the point of gas rationing wasn't to save oil. But to save rubber which was needed for the war effort.

  6. by HatetheSwamp on March 5, 2022 1:56 pm

I imagine that you remember as well as do I, gas rationing during the Carter presidency. I voted for Jimmie twice...but you remember the historic landslide that was the 1980 presidential election.

Being the moldable, compliant person I am...and, driving a car that gets 600+ miles out of a tank of gas...I'd be happy to go along with rationing. But, and, here's the thing, I complied with all of the vax opportunities made available to me and continued to wear a mask long after most people I know stopped. I'm a sheep in a way most Blue MAGA progressives are.

But, you know how passionately millions of Americans chafed against that Big Brotherism.

The overwhelming majority of Americans don't share your values on the evil of oil and gas.

What you're suggesting would be political suicide for progressives, no doubt. I hope that Joe takes you up on the heavy handed foisting of Big Bro policy.

We don’t actually need to import oil from Russia or anyplace else. In recent years we have been producing more oil than we consume, and even though we still import some crude oil, what the oil companies do is refine it and export most of the refined product (at a profit).

Despite the Republicans, for obvious reasons, desire to support the petroleum and coal industries and push against spending on developing clean renewable energy sources, it’s something we have to do. the EIA (the United States Energy Information Administration) estimates that we have, at the present rate of consumption, about 47.5 years left of underground oil reserves.

At this moment, as we speak, the energy I am using to heat my home and all my other household electrical needs are met by using the energy coming from the sun, and this energy is costing me nothing. I am not harming the environment and my source of energy will never run out. We also drive a Prius Hybrid, and with its little 10 gallon gas tank we can travel over 500 miles. This is what renewable energy is all about. We need to somehow get this across to the Republican base.

  8. by islander on March 5, 2022 2:38 pm

Also of course, if we reduce the need for oil, we take away the power that Russia, Saudi Arabia, etc. have over the rest of the people in the world! So let's get behind the move to devalue oil and move towards cleaner, cheaper, renewable sources, for or energy !!

  9. by HatetheSwamp on March 5, 2022 2:47 pm

From what I understand, the batteries in your Prius and our Camry hydrid will create an environmental issue when they go to that great battery graveyard in the sky.

  10. by HatetheSwamp on March 5, 2022 3:24 pm

    isle,

    A question:

How much does you MPG drop during those cold Maine winters?

  11. by islander on March 5, 2022 3:54 pm

Yes, the disposal of the batteries is something that must be considered. But we bought our Prius new in 2014, so you also have you figure in how much those batteries have cut down on our impact on the environment and the number of barrels of oil saved over the years.

Our gas mileage does drop by about 15% during the coldest winter months but we also cut WAY back on our driving.

Apparently Biden read my opening post and agreed with me.

It will be tough for Europe to cold turkey on Russian oil and gas, but I hope they do.
