Back before the 2016 election, somebody I know scoffed at the possibility that Hillary Clinton could lose to Donald Trump. I reminded him that half the people have a below average IQ.
With his Obama Birther Conspiracy, Trump managed to attract and coalesce the dumbest and most gullible Americans. The people who gave credence to Birtherism are mostly Republicans and racists. It's well documented that Barack Obama spent his earliest years in Hawaii. If he wasn't born there, he must have arrived by plane or ship as an infant, yet Trump nor any other Birther conspiracist has every produced a plane or ship manifest that listed a young Obama as a passenger. There is no other way to be in Hawaii besides plane, ship or birth. Not to mention, why would any parent deny where their child was born? Being native-born only matters for one job--the American presidency. If Obama's parents had designs that he'd run for president, why would they give him a foreign-sounding name?
Many of those ignorami are the two-thirds of Republicans who still think the 2020 election was rigged despite all the evidence, court cases, recounts and "forensic audits" which prove the election was free of any widespread voter fraud. The only isolated attempts of voter fraud have been by Republicans who tried to vote more than once and by Trump who tried to browbeat secretaries of state into "finding" more votes for him.
A good portion of the above-mentioned are the same people who refuse to be vaccinated and won't stop spreading COVID by distancing themselves from the right-thinking, vaccinated citizens. Among the social harm that the unvaccinated cause is their filling up hospitals forcing life-saving, non-COVID medical procedures (brain and heart surgeries, etc.) to be cancelled or postponed.
The Insurrection of January Sixth should have been enough for Trump-cultists to wake from their fever dream. A pandemic that has killed 800,000 Americans should be enough to convince people of the importance and efficacy of vaccinations. But somehow for some reason some people still don't get it.
