YORKIE DOODLE DANDY; A Memoir by William A. Wynne
    Contact:petxpert@aol.com
    Massachusetts USA 01701
Bill Wynne has crafted a wonderful book from his World War II experiences with the little Yorkshire Terrier he acquired in the South West Pacific Area where he was stationed. A story of mutual love and respect, it also points out the intelligence of one little dog, an award-winning Mascot who went on to string telephone wires under an airstrip taxiway, elevating her to War Dog status. The remarkable little Yorkie entertained the troops, learning so many different tricks (or behaviors) that after the war, during 42 consecutive weeks on television performing a trick a week, she never repeated a trick! Yorkie Doodle Dandy will appeal to dog lovers and historians alike. It's a heartwarming, inspiring story of one man and his very special little canine companion. ...Reviewed by Darlene Arden

    Irrepressible Toy Dog--by Darlene Arden
    Contact:anderson@SelectSmart.com
    OR USA 97520
    Website: http://www.selectsmart.com/DOG/expert.htm
If there are species of animals that have a wider range of diversity than do dogs I can't think of any. Consider the differences between a 4 lb. Maltese and 200 lb. Mastiff. Darlene Arden is keenly aware of the differences. Toys have distinct health, diet, housing and housebreaking considerations. They have personalities that set them apart from their larger kin. Darlene Arden offers sound advice including tips on how to keep your alpha toy dog from "attacking" a Great Dane. Small dog owners may unwittingly reinforce the very behavior that could endanger them. This book should be on the reference shelf of every owner of a toy dog and of every dog care professional. Available at Amazon.com--click on "Irrepressible Toy Dog" (with the blue book cover) at the top of this page. --Reviewed by Curt and Lorie Anderson.

Purina Encyclopedia of Dog Care by Amy Shojai
    Contact: Curt Anderson
    Ashland, OR USA 97520
    Website: http://www.selectsmart.com/DOG/expert.htm
There are four important factors in choosing an encyclopedia--any encyclopedia. 1. Is it complete? 2. Is it accurate? 3.. Is it easy to navigate? 4. Is it fun and interesting to read? Author Amy Shojai has written 11 non-fiction pet books and numerous articles. This Purina spokesperson and former veterinary technician is an authority of considerable standing, so I have confidence that this 500 page book is both complete and accurate. As for it being easy to navigate, I decided to look for problem my own dog might have. The problem, flatulence, was quickly found along with symptoms, home care, vet care, and prevention tips. (The home care tips included eliminating table scraps and the introduction of yogurt into the diet) The book has complete index and the chapters are arranged into about 200 short chapters. In most of these chapters, the reader is aided by a concise chart--especially valuable in an emergency. The book's symptoms at a glance are also useful to the concerned pet owner. Shojai is an entertaining writer. She has an obvious wealth of knowledge, and the uncommon ability to write about topics so they are accessible by any dog lover. The book is well illustrated with half-tone photos, line drawings and color photos. (Click on its cover at the top of this page to go to Amazon.com). To read an excerpt from this book visit, click on the website link above. This book is a must for any caring dog owner. -Reviewed by Curt Anderson

TOY DOG EXPERT ANSWERS ALL YOUR QUESTIONS - Reviewed by Lisa Preston. After reading "The Irrepressible Toy Dog," I was astonished at the amount of research and information available on toy dog breeds given by author Darlene Arden. She has thoroughly researched everything and should be highly commended in this remarkable compilation. I loved the adorable photos (how often do you get to see a toy dog in a shoe?! LOL) and it is so fabulous I recommend it HIGHLY to every toy dog owner, veterinarian, educator and dog lover. If your toy dog could talk, Ms. Arden has captured every word they would say. If this book isn't in your collection -- it must be soon. I give it my highest recommendation. My dogs concur and give it a 4-paws up rating each! Available at Amazon.com

On The Trail With Your Canine Companion By Cheryl S. Smith
    Contact:anderson@SelectSmart.com
    Ashland, OR USA 97520
    Website: http://www.SelectSmart.com/DOG/expert.htm
I was predisposed to liking the book as soon as I saw the cover (see cover at the top of this page). The cover features three American Eskimo Dogs -- the kind of dog I happen to have -- on the trail, ready for the camp site. I like Cheryl S. Smith's book for two reasons. First, because she has a lot good information and tips that I'll use such as these: *How to prepare your canine companion for camping and hiking. *How to use your dog's keen senses to see and enjoy more wildlife. *How to avoid dangers on the trail and in the camp. Second, because if every dog owner who takes their dog hiking or camping would read this book, and heed her advice on responsible pet ownership, everybody who enjoys the great outdoors would benefit. If you ever plan to take your dog hiking or camping, buy this book. (Click on its cover to go to Amazon.com).
