The GOP Owns the Border Now. Democrats Will Make Sure of It.
Hard-right Republicans killed the Senate immigration deal out of fealty to Trump. That’s the perfect opening for Biden to go on the attack. And he has. Trump is on record opposing the bi-partisan border deal (not that he has a better proposal) in which Republicans got what they purportedly wanted. Trump decided it is better have the problem than the solution.

Republicans are in disarray. They shot themselves in the foot with a series of legislative missteps yesterday.

The GOP became the nativist party and scared their constituents about the “invasion” of immigrants. Finally when they had chance to do something about the border they are against it. The immigration bill was authored by Sen. Lankford (R-OK). The Conference of Mayors—including the Republican mayors—unanimously approved it. The border cops union approved it. It is only congressional Republicans who oppose it.

Biden quickly chided Republicans and taunted them to grow a spine. Now Biden and Democrats are the only party willing to address immigration. Inflation is going away as an issue for Republicans and Trump. Trump and his cult just surrendered immigration as an issue.

Republicans are in disarray. They shot themselves in the foot with a series of legislative missteps yesterday.

GOPs may have killed their chances of keeping the House yesterday, and damaged their probability of retaking the Senate, but that stammering, stuttering, Doddering, forgetful old fool is in big, big trouble.

As usual, the dims had the ability to get a bill through in something they would vote for in the first two years. Why didn't they do it then? They need it now because their methods aren't working. So now it's someone else's fault? I don't think so. They need to quit being serial victims of their own decisions.

  3. by Curt_Anderson on February 7, 2024 11:36 am
    OD,
There have been several failed legislative attempts at addressing border/immigration issues. The most recent was 2013 when John Boehner (R-OH) didn’t allow a House vote. See link.

Republicans are handling the immigration issue like they did abortion as an issue. They are loathe to actually address the issues.

Bull$#!t, Curt. The House passed an immigration bill, HR 2 in May of 20EFFIN23. It was dead on arrival in the Dem controlled Senate!!!!

  5. by Curt_Anderson on February 7, 2024 12:32 pm
Yes, that's right. The House came up with a xenophobic bill that the Senate said in advance they would reject as presented. The House rejected any Senate reconciliation of the bill to something less draconian. With a few exceptions the current crop of House Republicans reject the notion that getting most of want they want is better than getting nothing. They are the anti-compromise party. That works in an authoritarian government; not so well in a democracy.

Soon after the failure the House bill, Sen. Lankford started working up the bill that was rejected by the House yesterday.

Republicans are the loudest in denouncing the immigration status quo. It's therefore incumbent upon them to come up with agreeable solution. It should be something that fits our values as a nation of immigrants.

Just so you admit. You were wrong.

  7. by Indy! on February 7, 2024 2:47 pm

Mr. Reality here... Neither party wants a bill because they are the same party and think alike on virtually everything that matters.

  8. by HatetheSwamp on February 7, 2024 3:59 pm

    Bingo, Indy.

I was waiting for the dust to settle over Schumer's so-called "bipartisan" bill to do a thread saying that the Swamp won again on immigration. Nothing was accomplished other than creating material for fundraising letters and campaign ads. It's what they want.

    As always.

"Under pressure from former president Donald Trump, Republican senators today killed the $118 billion Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act that provided funding for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan and humanitarian assistance for Gaza and also included protections for the border that Republicans themselves had demanded.

Senator Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ), one of the team of senators who had negotiated the bill, called out the Republicans who had staged photo ops at the border and insisted that Congress must address the rise in migration across the border…until Trump told them the opposite: ** “After all those trips to the desert, after all those press conferences, it turns out this crisis isn’t much of a crisis after all. Sunday morning, it’s a real crisis,” she said. “Monday morning it magically disappeared.”After four months of Senate negotiations over the bill produced a strong bipartisan agreement, Trump pulled the rug out from under a measure that gave the Republicans much of what they wanted, partly because he wanted the issue of immigration and the border to run on in 2024, it seems, but also to demonstrate that he could command Congress to do his bidding. It appears that Trump is trying to turn the Republican Party into an instrument he can use as he wishes." *HCR

The con-game is over...The curtain has been pulled back and Donald, pretending to be a wizard, has been exposed for what we all knew he really is.

    Horsepucky, isle.

Dems joined with GOPs in preventing the bill even receiving a vote.

    isle,

Did you know that even CHUCK YOU SCHUMER voted against the bill!!!!!?

    Bahahahahahahahahahaha baha baha ha!

But, you're right. The con game is over...YOURS! Keehee.

  11. by islander on February 8, 2024 6:33 am

We know precisely why Schumer changed his vote to no when he was sure the bill was not going to pass...but you don't.

You're going to have to come up with a conspiracy theory to try and explain it to yourself.

We know precisely why Schumer changed his vote to no when he was sure the bill was not going to pass...but you don't.
The fact that you didn't articulate "the" reason for this and didn't say why, tells me you don't know either. You may have a "thought," but either you don't know, or you're playing that 12 year-old mean girls thing. Which I'm not falling for. You do this more than an average adult should. It's the same BS that "I told you blahblahblah..., and if you didn't get it, I'm not telling you." Honestly, your stuff is hard to read for a direct answer. And many times, I actually want to see what your thinking and how you came about that answer.

  13. by HatetheSwamp on February 8, 2024 7:18 am

Mr UNDERSTAND MAN is in Mr Bojangles mode again. The salient truth here is that Dems and GOPs joined together to destroy the bill... and Trump can't be blamed... among people of reason and logic.

  14. by islander on February 8, 2024 7:41 am

These must be very difficult and terribly depressing times for you undercover Trump supporters. But you can't blame anybody except yourselves !! 😁

  15. by HatetheSwamp on February 8, 2024 7:56 am

    First,

There are no Trump supporters currently in the SS community, though I beg Curt to hire at least one.

Second, Joe's being killed on the immigration issue.

"There are no Trump supporters currently in the SS community"

If I were a Trump supporter I'd be ashamed to admit it too.

  19. by HatetheSwamp on February 8, 2024 8:46 am

I think you're being presumptive and sanctimonious. I know many MAGAs. They're all proud to be so.

  20. by Indy! on February 8, 2024 9:58 am

Peebs nailed it above - just another fundraising opportunity for both parties (read "the one party"). If they let it get to the vote, then a LOT of people (not just us stupid political junkies) would know who voted yes/no and perhaps hold back on cash or votes (if votes even matter any more).

SIDEBAR: Speaking of con jobs and since it was in the bill along with the feigned concern for the border... Is no one else even the LEAST bit curious or suspicious about how fast Ukraine went from being the "fight of our lives" to a 2 inches of column story on page 32C virtually overnight? Even y'all disbelievers have to understand now this is nothing more than another 20yr money hole for our overbloated military like Vietnam, Afghanistan, Start Wars and SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE Force!

(Say that last part like the Space Ghost intro and you'll get it.)

  21. by islander on February 8, 2024 10:01 am

The Trump supporters who go undercover do so out of shame.

Sometimes I almost feel sorry for you guys and think to myself...Well maybe we should show a little compassion and try to figure out how to let you save face "somehow"...But then I ask myself, Why??? And I can't come up with any good reason. It was always your choice but you chose to do what you knew was wrong.

  22. by HatetheSwamp on February 8, 2024 10:10 am

Interesting. You claim to know some personally. Is that what you're seeing?

The MAGAs in my world are organically gleeful these days.

And, in the right-wing media?, they're beginning to chide themselves about premature overconfidence.

  23. by islander on February 8, 2024 11:49 am

As you know, I’m talking about the undercover Trump supporters, the ones we have here who claim to disavow Trump and always include a disclaimer as they covertly do all they can to insure his victory.

  24. by HatetheSwamp on February 8, 2024 12:04 pm

You our SS community Miss Cleo, eh?
