I did not disgrace my family in yesterday's Fourth of July 10k (6.2 miles) race which I ram in 1:06:28. That is a 10:42 per mile pace.

I am wearing a navy blue shirt, black shorts, white cap and blue shoes in the video below.

The annual Ashland Fourth of July Run kicks off festivities here including a parade, etc. I founded, organized and managed this race 46 years ago.

    Since you brought it up, the race is chip timed. There were more than 200 participants on the starting line. The display clock starts when the gun goes off. Each runner carries an electronic chip that is activated when they cross the starting line which is about 20 feet wide. You can imagine the bottleneck at the start. It took me about 15 seconds to cross the starting line after the gun sounded.

    You are probably thinking about shin splints. That happens when a runner suddenly starts or greatly increases the intensity of their work outs. I was common among us runners in high school track and cross-country. But I haven't had them in years.

    👍👍👍 Good going Curt !! My running days are over. Now I'm down to walking two or three miles with my wife each morning before breakfast. Our property is bordered by a wildlife sanctuary so our walks are seldom boring! 😀

    I couldn't find you in the video, Curt, but your time is impressive.

    I used to be able to run a mile in 7:45 back in college, but I've never run anything close to 10K, and even if I had, I wouldn't have been able to average 7:45/mile in a race that long.

    Sometimes that video queues up directly to me, sometimes not. Not sure why. This is me finishing the race. I am a little greyer than you might remember.


    Islander, my wife and I walk similar distances, though not quite every day like you two. My wife in particular gets a workout from gardening. In a couple of weeks we will be heading east where we will visit family in Martha's Vineyard. We will be taking some short side trips to Providence RI and New Haven CT. We plan to take long walks in the historic and interesting sections of those cities.

    Of course Sheri and I are greying too. You look the same as I temember. Your cap is hiding your advancing grey hair.

    When did we have lunch in Santa Monica? We think it was a little over a decade ago. Other than normal aging, the only other thing that's changed in my appearance since then is that I've lost about 25 pounds.

    Great job on the weight loss! Is it possible that it was closer to 20 years ago? My son is 26 now, and I remember him being grade school age then. If he was closer to 16 and in high school he would have wanted to stay home. The hat also protects my balding pate from the sun.

    Thank you, Curt. All of my weight loss happened over the last 15 months after I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, which prompted me to reform my eating habits. It's all about carbs. I went from 178 to 153 and have kept it off. That's about what I weighed in college. I've been as heavy as 184.

    You could be right about it having been closer to 20 years, Curt.

    My wife says we were in Santa Monica about 12 or 13 years ago. She remembers our 13 year old nephew was an infant. We visited his family down there.
