Good stuff. I disagree on Ukraine on the bottom line but I do agree that the claim that Ukraine ain't a "democracy" is bang on.

My sense is that Tucker's right that the woke limousine lib progressive SwampLover crowd has fallen for the democracy ploy hook, line and sinker. Nuh uh. One can support Ukraine without thinking that Zelenskyy is the next Gandhi.

First time I heard about Ukraine I nailed it as nothing more than a money laundering scheme. To pretend it has anything at all to do with democracy is the equivalent of believing Kuwait is now a Jeffersonian democracy thanks to George HW Bush pulling their monarchy's ass out of the fire Bush himself started when he greenlighted Iraq's invasion of the country. It's comical than anyone anywhere is still acting like there is some noble cause involved in Ukraine when half the time it's obvious as the coke under Neil Young's nose in The Last Waltz that Zelensky is stoned out of his mind on something. The best remedy for everyone involved would be to pull out and hang that rock around Putin's neck if he wants it that bad.

So far as Newsom being the heir apparent to Biden? I haven't seen anything to suggest it, but the scene Tucker describes sure sounds like it. I would prefer that turn of events than the Ds continually trying to make Kamala and/or Pete Buttigieg into the leaders of the country they are so obviously not. Which reminds me - did you guys ever get to see any of my classic critically acclaimed Li'l Kamala series...?

Ukraine has a long history of corruption. In 2014, Ukrainians through their elected official charged their very corrupt and kleptocratic Russian puppet president Viktor Yanukovych with high treason and he fled the country.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy was an actor who starred in the comedy series “Servant of the People” which featured Zelenskyy as a high school teacher who became the Ukrainian president after a speech he made about corruption in the country’s government. Sheri and I watched several episodes. It was much better than I thought it would be.

I think I've watched every major address Zelenskyy has made since Russia invaded, and IMO if there's anyone who's willing and able to de-corrupt the Ukrainian government, it's him. To knee-jerkingly cast him off as just another corrupt Ukrainian president is essentially throwing in the towel on Ukraine, not to mention unfair to Zelenskyy. I support Ukraine's war against Russian aggression 100%.

Of course you do. I wouldn't expect anything less after you told me the other day you still buy the Russia, Rachel, Russia thing years after it's been debunked. BTW you forgot the trademark - it's Russian aggression™ - Hunter Biden gets $10 every time somebody says it. 😂

"First time I heard about Ukraine I nailed it as nothing more than a money laundering scheme." -Indy!

First time I heard about the invasion, I figured it was nothing more than a Putin militarily invading and occupying another country in order to take it over kinda scheme.

    But I was mistaken...?

That's like saying Hitler was justified in invading his neighbors because of inequities in the Treaty of Versailles.

Curt - In your inimitable way, your answer revealed your insecurity at what Donna and Pondy might discover if they actually wanted to know the real story. Don't worry - they don't. 😉

  10. by Curt_Anderson on June 29, 2023 1:25 pm
Go ahead, Indy! Tell us the real story. If there is a side that puts Putin in a positive light, I'd be interested in hearing it.

  11. by Indy! on June 29, 2023 1:38 pm

Now the classic Curt Bait and Switch - you get points for consistency, but where did I say Putin was the good guy? Sometimes there is no good guy.

Ok, expand upon "check the history before Putin invaded". I took that mean there was another side to the story that justified Putin's invasion of Ukraine. I don't want to put words in your mouth. Give us your history lesson.

  13. by Indy! on June 29, 2023 2:18 pm

Check into the full background - go back at least to 2014. I'm not going to do your homework because when you AND Donna both called me out on the $2000 thing, I jumped thru all the hoops to get you the information and sourcing to prove I was correct and neither of you so much as acknowledged it. I'm pointing you in the right direction... this time you're on your own. 😘

  14. by Curt_Anderson on June 29, 2023 3:26 pm
    Indy,
We can safely assume that your lack of response means you have nothing...again.

I have no idea what you think happened in 2014 that somehow exonerates Putin or implicates Zelenskyy. That's the year when Russia invaded and annexed Crimea. Ukraine's then president was a Putin puppet named Viktor Yanukovych. He now lives in exile in Russia.

Yes, we called you out and you are still wrong. Apparently you were mad that the $2000 was delivered in two installments rather than a single check. You whined, "it was Biden's LIE that he was going to give everybody $2000". We all got $2000. Promise fulfilled. Just ask Snopes: "Did Biden, Ossoff, and Warnock Mislead Public With Promise of '$2000 Checks'?"

    Indy?
Are you referring the paragraph from a site called en.as.com? Yes, I can find it, but as august and authoritative that site is and your snippet from it, it doesn't make you correct.

  19. by Donna on June 29, 2023 5:49 pm

Indy, if you go back and re-read what I said, the only thing I said at that time was that you hadn't responded to what Curt posted on that issue, but actually you had responded already, but your response was on another topic thread which I hadn't read yet.

I remember reading about the controversy a couple of years ago, but I don't remember the details. I think I concluded what Curt did, but I haven't read the snopes piece or what your sources are saying about it. Maybe your sources are correct; maybe Curt's are. I'm agnostic on it.

    Indy,
Here is a timeline of the $2000 stimulus money most of us received as result of Joe Biden and the Democrats winning the 2020 election.

(Dec 24 2020) House Republicans block an attempt by Democrats to pass a standalone bill to raise direct payments to Americans to $2,000 from $600.

(Dec 27, 2020) After holding up the $900 billion coronavirus relief bill for nearly a week, President Donald Trump has just signed off on the stimulus package, which includes $600 checks.
The House plans to vote on a measure to increase stimulus checks to $2,000 on Monday, and in a statement released by Trump on Sunday night, he said the Senate would also “start the process for a vote that increases checks to $2,000.”

(Dec 28, 2020) House passes bill to increase $600 stimulus checks to $2,000. It now goes to the Senate

(Dec 30, 2020) [Then Senate Majority Leader] McConnell and GOP reject House’s $2,000 stimulus checks

Then on January 6th, Ossoff and Warnock were both elected.

The new Senate couldn't change the House's $600 stimulus checks into $2000 stimulus checks, so they added a second check for $1400.

That seems pretty straightforward. Apparently Indy has different info, but I didn't look at the link he provided. Maybe he can post a synopsis here.

  22. by Ponderer on June 29, 2023 6:48 pm

I'm sure that Indy! read something somewhere sometime ago, stuff that we're still getting from our old pal Cascade on Facebook, stuff about how Ukraine was full of Nazis and now we're helping Nazis and the whole government being totally corrupt. And it was. Totally corrupt that is. Very few Nazis.

Oh and Putin was forced to invade Ukraine because Ukraine and other countries near him were making signs about wanting into NATO (Geez, I wonder why those countries would be afraid of Putin? What's Putin ever done to any countries to make them fear him so? Hmmm... It's quite a mystery I tell ya) and Putin was promised that Ukraine would never join NATO and then here they are about to request membership in NATO and Ukraine is really a part of Russia already and always was and yadda yadda yadda yadda......

Anyway, he doesn't remember where he read it or whose site it was on or any of that. He just remembers some dates and places from reading some stuff that he thought shone a really bad light on Ukraine awhiles back. And if we just search around the internet until we magically land on whatever site he was at, well then we'll know what he knows.

Here is what Biden said while campaigning for Ossoff and Warnock in their runoff elections:

"We need more direct relief flowing to families," Biden said at an event on Friday. “Finishing the job of getting people that $2,000 of relief, the direct payment, $600 is simply not enough.”

The $2,000 stimulus check proposal was blocked by the Republican-controlled Senate back in December but is now gaining steam after Democrats won both of Georgia’s Senate seats earlier this week, giving them control of the chamber.
    ----------------------------

Biden wasn't promising to add to then-undelivered $600 another $2000 making it a total of $2600. He promised to finish "the job of getting people that $2,000 of relief".

Indy's source is an apparent sports website called en.as.com. See link.

Even if Biden did give the impression there would a single $2000 check, it's petty quibbling to complain it came as $600 and $1400.

I just checked our bank records and found that on Jan 8 2030 we received $1200 in COVID Relief, and on March 15 2020 we received another $2800.

So it appears that Ponderer and I each got $2000 as promised.

Of course you did. Same as I did when I read your Snopes comment.

    1. ------------------------------------------------

Snopes is a fact check source with an AllSides Media Bias Rating™ of Lean Left.

We reviewed the numerous instances of Snopes' left-wing bias that we found during our June 2020 Editorial Review, such as slant. We also noted a number of times that Snopes had recently interpreted things in favor of the left, including when it "fact checked" a subjective opinion on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), when it defended Gov. Andrew Cuomo by saying an accurate tweet about him was "Mostly False," and when it "fact-checked" satire from humor website The Babylon Bee (an entry Snopes then had to edit following criticism). 😂

AllSides noted that Snopes' story choice is generally favorable to the left, and it lacks fact checks on subjects that speak to a conservative or more right-wing audience. Its collections page also showed left bias, with the first page still predominantly highlighting Trump.

At the time, AllSides also noted that RealClearPolitics' Fact Check Review found that 89% of Snopes articles from January 27, 2021 to June 26, 2021 used at least one media source as verification for its claims, rather than using original sources. The percentage "captures how many claims by [the] fact checker relied at least in part on media reporting as “truth” for its verification task," RCP writes. "When fact checkers rely on media for verification, this creates a cycle in which media cite fact checkers which in turn cite media. Ideally, fact checking should involve primary source verification, rather than relying on secondary news reporting as verification."

    2. ------------------------------------------------

The Co-Founder Of Snopes Wrote Dozens Of Plagiarized Articles For The Fact-Checking Site
“You can always take an existing article and rewrite it just enough to avoid copyright infringement."

    ...

Meet Jeff Zarronandia. During a brief but memorable career, his byline, which linked to a bio detailing his Pulitzer Prize and his skill at mule-skinning, appeared on at least 23 Snopes articles on topics like Donald Trump’s financial woes and false rumors about Hillary Clinton. His reporting made enemies of hoaxsters and fabulists across the political spectrum, including former Trump campaign adviser Roger Stone and the late “fake-news kingpin” Paul Horner, both of whom were unaware of his true identity.

"It's just a David Mikkelson alt,” Snopes' former managing editor Brooke Binkowski explained when BuzzFeed News inquired. "He used to write about topics he knew would get him hate mail under that assumed name. Plus it made it appear he had more staff than he had."

Between 2015 and 2019, Mikkelson regularly plagiarized reporting from other news outlets in an effort, he said, to scoop up traffic.

Snopes Retracts 60 Articles Plagiarized by Co-Founder: ‘Our Staff Are Gutted’

The fact-checking site has banned David Mikkelson, who owns half the company, from writing articles after a BuzzFeed News investigation prompted an internal review.

    By Heather Murphy
    Aug. 13, 2021

Snopes, which has long presented itself as the internet’s premier fact-checking resource, has retracted 60 articles after a BuzzFeed News investigation found that the site’s co-founder plagiarized from news outlets as part of a strategy intended to scoop up web traffic.

“As you can imagine, our staff are gutted and appalled by this,” Vinny Green, the Snopes chief operating officer, said on Friday. He said the Snopes editorial team was conducting a review to understand just how many articles written by David Mikkelson, the site’s co-founder and chief executive, featured content plagiarized from other news sites.

As of Friday afternoon, the team had found 60, he said. By Friday morning, dozens of articles had been removed from the site, with pages that formerly featured those articles now showing the word “retracted” and an explanation that “some or all of its content was taken from other sources without proper attribution.” Ads have been removed from these articles, according to Mr. Green.

Mr. Mikkelson, who owns 50 percent of Snopes Media Group, will continue to be Snopes’s chief executive, but his ability to publish articles has been revoked, Mr. Green said.

Fact-checking the fact-checkers: ‘Pants on Fire’ partisans

Snopes.com describes itself as the “definitive fact-checking site,” yet turns out to be a big source of misinformation: Its cofounder has written dozens of plagiarized pieces — many of them attacks on Republican politicos.

It’s just the latest example of “fact-checking” serving as a cover for partisan, left-wing opinion.

A BuzzFeed investigation found that Snopes’ David Mikkelson has “been lying to the site’s tens of millions of readers.” Snopes, which has served as a Facebook fact-checker, confirmed that Mikkelson published at least 54 plagiarized articles under various bylines.

His fake alter-ego, Jeff Zarronandia, claimed to be a Pulitzer Prize winner and had bylines “on at least 23 Snopes articles on topics like Donald Trump’s financial woes and false rumors about Hillary Clinton.”

Snopes has suspended Mikkelson from editorial duties pending “a comprehensive internal investigation.” But he’s still a company officer and 50 percent shareholder.

Indy note: Politico is so obviously leftwing it's not even worth my time to delve into it. As well as Vox (founded by Democrat operative Ezra Klein) which I've seen you folks use as source material in the time I've been back.

Not even good spin for you, Donna the Duplicitous. As I said, Snopes is a front for the DNC. They have been verified as a left leaning website run by Democrat proponents who dabble in plagiarism when they aren't apologizing for your corrupt party.

And you need to look up the definition of "info dump" too. 🙄

  36. by Curt_Anderson on June 30, 2023 12:24 pm
Often times you can skip the fact checkers and their inevitable biases and instead use logic.

Indy and others claimed and complained that Biden (he lied!) promised $2000 beyond the $600 Congress managed to pass. The then-GOP controlled Senate fought the $2000 amount the Democrats who controlled the House wanted.

But did he lie and break a promise? An honest and logical assessment would say he didn’t.

Here is what Biden said while campaigning for Ossoff and Warnock in their runoff elections: "We need more direct relief flowing to families," Biden said at an event on Friday. “Finishing the job of getting people that $2,000 of relief, the direct payment, $600 is simply not enough.”

Notice Biden didn’t say there would be an additional $2000. He was pretty clear “finishing the job” meant “getting people that $2,000” and that $600 isn’t enough. Nowhere did he say there would be a single check for $2,000.

Bottom line: If you accuse somebody of lying and breaking a promise, you have to practically diagram the suspect promise.

  37. by Indy! on June 30, 2023 2:15 pm

Curt - we got it. You want to believe $1400 is the same as $2000 because it gets Biden off the hook for providing less relief than your arch nemesis Donald Trump provided under his term. You're good - you're welcome to believe whatever you want to believe. That doesn't mean those of us who were paying attention have to believe it - just like we don't have to believe Biden actually wanted to raise the minimum wage or do something about Roe being overturned on his watch or student debt relief or any thing else that went beyond "nothing will fundamentally change"... the only campaign promise he actually kept.

  38. by Curt_Anderson on June 30, 2023 2:42 pm
And you have a right to your mistaken beliefs and bitching, Indy!

Incidentally, since the President has to set priorities, I am glad that raising the minimum wage was a low priority. Anyway, Congress establishes the minimum wage, not the President.

The current unemployment rate is very low at around 3.5%, that's a 50 years' low. When Biden took office, the unemployment rate was 6.3%. When there are more job openings than candidates to fill them, the laws of supply and demand cause wages to increase. Only 1.5% of Americans work at minimum wage jobs...and probably not for long.

  39. by Indy! on June 30, 2023 2:49 pm

The unemployment rate is low because the benefits ran out a year or so back for most people and they fell off the unemployment rolls. Anyone who believes the economy and employment are in good shape hasn't taken a look at the homeless numbers recently.
