Sheri and I - nothing (as usual).

To me, New Year's Day is just another day.

How about y'all?

Probably nothing. At least we won’t be doing anything that I can post on this family oriented website. I have long felt that New Year’s is about 12 times is exciting as the change from one month to the next.

We definitely are not inclined to go to a bar where the only difference is that they add an exorbitant cover charge, and you might get a party hat and a noise maker.

We're beginning our snowbirding time in the south. We're in S Carolina and tired from traveling. We're eating an early dinner at our Myrtle Beach fave restaurant, then, probably, hitting the hat early.

    Geezers

Hay. I hate the auto-correct in this phone!

LOL! We're such an exciting bunch. Yes, geezers we are, but I haven't been much of a New Year's Eve celebrator most of my life. I almost always konk out before midnight.

Myrtle Beach, eh? I once spent a week there back in 1973. Family vacation. I shot my first round of golf there, a course called "Myrtlewood". I'm sure that, like most things, the city has changed a lot in over 49 years.

I was in Myrtle Beach in the early to mid 80s. I remember we were watching the weather to see if hurricane Andrew would be going up the coast towards where we were.

    Donna,
So we have a Russian in the family now. So there are some holidays we don't do here that "now" we "must" do. NYE is a must. Orthodox Christmas (one of two holidays in the Orthodox Church that "must" be done). So we do them. Some of these practices are about 1900 years old. These are old beliefs. They're ingrained, so we respect them.

I'm just saying that Things are different in everyone.

Some Christians -- Amish, Mennonites, and some of the orthodox denominations of eastern Europe and western Asia -- celebrate Christmas on January 6th, 12 days after December 25th.

As usual and as I predicted (not here), I fell asleep on the couch well before midnight. Sheri woke me up at 12:02 after she herself was awaken by the sound of firecrackers.

    For what it's worth, I wish y'all a happy 2023.

  8. by Curt_Anderson on January 1, 2023 1:00 pm
    Yes, Happy 2023 to all.

We wound up doing more than expected. After a pleasant walk, we went out for a nice dinner and managed to be awake at midnight. We also watched Ford v Ferrari on a streaming service. That's a big todo for us on New Year's eve.

By the way, Ukrainians are reportedly celebrating Christmas and New Years in the western tradition rather than on their usual dates coinciding with the Russian (and Greek) Orthodox calendar. Understandably, Ukrainians want to disassociate themselves from Russia in every way possible.

Right - I learned about that on Tuesday when I was talking to a manager at a Whole Foods I work at. She's half Ukrainian and explained that she used to celebrate Dec 25th and Jan 6th, but that this year she only celebrated it on Dec 25th because of what you just posted.

Sheri's half Ukrainian too. Her maternal grandparents were born and raised in Ukraine, but she didn't know about the Christmas thing.

  10. by oldedude on January 1, 2023 9:34 pm
Okay. we are celebrating on J6. Why? because my daughter in law is Russian. Our life is extremely fukked up right now because of the war. My Daughter in law actually prayed (a very rare occurrence) for all the people in Ukraine and the conscripts in Russia. That's interesting. She has family on both sides. It would be very interesting if Sheri had people fighting in Ukraine. That, for the former US military in Ukraine. I know the people giving their lives for the Ukranian people. That is different. There was never any promise of payment to serve or to die for the country.
If they didn't... they're on they're own. We wish them well, but they don't have the same "rights" as someone that served and was willing to die.

Sheri doesn't know any relatives who might be living in Ukraine.
