Based on whodunit detective books, television shows and movies you might think murderers are always captured or killed. According to statistics compiled by Project: Cold Case, the sad fact is that many murders are never solved. Between 1965 and 2019, one third of murders have never been solved. Of 2019 murders, 42.36% are to date unsolved. Of course, many cold case murders are eventually solved. See database in link below.
If you subtract all the murders in which the perpetrator quickly confesses or witness identify the killer, those remaining homicides by more stealthy murderers will largely go unsolved. Of course, a percent of "solved" murders become unsolved when the convicted person is later exonerated.
