You may have heard of Italygate, the pro-Trump, QAnon-affiliated conspiracy theory that alleges the 2020 United States presidential election was rigged to favor Joe Biden using satellites and military technology to remotely switch votes from Donald Trump to Biden from the U.S. Embassy in Rome.
I never thought that Russians were interfering in our elections by tampering directly with voting machines in anything like Italygate. I do assume that Russian trolls and bots were and are furiously posting pro-Trump messages and memes on social network sites. From the Russian perspective, what they do is no different than our Voice of America radio broadcasts.
Influential Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, who is linked to President Vladimir Putin and sanctioned by Washington and European countries, admitted on Monday to interfering in U.S. elections.
"Gentlemen, we interfered, we are interfering and we will interfere," Prigozhin, who has been accused of running a "troll factory" to influence the outcome of votes in several Western countries, said in a statement quoted by his team.
"Carefully, precisely, surgically and the way we do it, the way we can," Prigozhin quipped.
Prigozhin, 61, responded to a request to comment on a Bloomberg report saying Russia was interfering in the U.S. midterm elections.
