WNBA star Brittney Griner was sentenced to 9 years in Russian prison after being convicted on drug charges by a Moscow court Thursday.

Prosecutors asked for a sentence of 9 1/2 years after closing arguments in a lengthy trial that has underscored the frayed relations between the United States and Russia since the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.

My opinion of Griner is that she's not a nice person and probably deserves this...

...but that may only be because I'm a U Conn fan with a long memory.

One would have to be devoid of empathy to not feel bad for Ms. Griner. OTOH it was really stupid of her to take any kind of controlled substance into Russia. Hopefully a prisoner swap deal will be made.

She made at least three stupid moves. Bringing hash oil into Russia. Having it in her possession while in Russia. Trying to take it out. If her first mistake was unintentional, she should thrown her THC and vape pipe into the nearest dumpster as soon as she realized it.

Another dumb move was to be in Russia while their Ukraine invasion was just a day or two away. That's like staying in Nazi Germany at the start of WWII. It's hard enough to dealing with friendly governments, dealing with an enemy nation during wartime is practically impossible.

Marijuana is legal in Oregon. It's not legal in many states. I wouldn't try to get through airport security in Boise, Idaho with a lid in my pocket.

Very poor judgment on her part, no question. I still feel bad for her. She wasn't trying to hurt anyone.

Nope. "Pleaded" is the correct past tense of plead when used as legal terminology. See link.

Again, although this was a very poor deflection. If you're just insisting on being correct about something/ anything, I guess I'll give it to you. Just because sometimes you need your ego stroked.

To be fair, though,

"Pleaded guilty" and "pled guilty" are both acceptable because "pleaded" and "pled" are both used as the past tense of "to plead." The most acceptable past tense is "pleaded," but, over time, "pled" has also become acceptable. He pleaded guilty to the charge."

So both are correct, although "pleaded" is preferred.
