Like similar bills that Republicans are pushing in dozens of state legislatures nationwide, the Florida measure adds hurdles to voting by mail, restricts the use of drop boxes and prohibits any actions that could influence those standing in line to vote under the hot Florida sun.
STATEMENT FROM FLORIDA STATE SENATOR LINDA STEWART ON GOVERNOR'S SIGNING OF RESTRICTIVE VOTING BILL INTO LAW
May 6, 2021
Orlando – Our elections system was not broken. Florida operated a seamless election last year in the midst of a global pandemic. The Governor’s signing of this elections bill is a slap in the face to our Supervisors of Elections across all of Florida’s 67 counties. No one asked for this bill. Not our Supervisors, and surely not Floridians who turned out in record numbers last cycle to make their voices heard.
This legislation is just Governor DeSantis tightening his authoritarian grip over our elections system, and employing oppressive measures to restrict voter access and empower partisan politics. This is all simply unnecessary, will face legal challenges that will be costly to taxpayers, and will undermine citizen’s confidence in our elections system.
