My brain is very number oriented. I'm not a math genius or anything like that, trust me. But numbers stick in my brain. I only remember a few of the kids in my first grade class but of those I do, I remember their birthdays. Back when our phones didn't store phone numbers, I had the phones numbers of nearly everyone I knew floating around up there. It's actually annoying.

And, as Donna and I have discussed, I'm also a little OCD-ish. The numbers and the OCD are probably connected.

One way that has worked out is that I've never bought a car unless I could have expected to pay less than 10 cents a mile for gas to drive it. So, if gas was $2.50/ gallon, my car would have to get more than 25 MPG. I've never had trouble.

Our last car before this one was a Honda Civic Coupe. It got about 35 MPG new. We gave it to a kid I worked with with about 150,000 miles on it and it was still was getting 32 MPG and gas was about $2.50, even less.

Donald Trump was President.

We bought this Camry Hybrid in September 020. The sticker said that it would get 52 MPG.

My experience with Toyota hybrids is that they do well in warm weather, not so much when it's cold.

When we drove it off the lot in September, still warmish in Pennsylvania, it started out at about 48 and built up to 52.3 for a few miles until the cumulative MPG began to tumble. By the next spring, MPG fell to 48.6. Last summer it peaked at 52.2. We were in the south during this past winter and the average only fell to 51.7. Now, it's back to 52.0. We're getting about 54 MPG on this tank.

Thing is. Joe Biden is President.

Shortly after we bought the car, I wrote a post on a blog actually complaining that I paid extra for the hybrid and gas cost me less than 5c a mile.

But, as we know, Joe's in the Oval Office now.

Today, at the station we use, Regular is 4.96 with, as they say on Billboard, a bullet.

Today is June 4.

Whadaya wanna bet? Before the Fourth of July, because of Joe, pb will break his 10c/mile rule of thumb?

pb's a geezer. After all these years! I'm expecting that my OCD will go bonkers.

    HtS,
Can you think of anything that was happening worldwide in 2020 that might have caused a reduced demand for gasoline and oil which would in turn cause prices to drop?

Extra credit: Why would prices increase now after two years of remote work from home, when few people traveling for vacations, pleasure, et cetera?

The problem is, Curt, that the average American is too unaware to even know about what you posted and too uneducated to understand it if they saw it.

And then there are those who know about and understand what you just posted but choose to lie about the reason for high gasoline prices.

I dunno but I think it has something to do with the fact that, when the Doddering Old Fool called the Saudis to ask them to increase oil production, they wouldn't even talk to him.

This helps to explain some of the dynamics behind it.

    From the site link above"

"None of this has made Saudi Arabia particularly amenable to American entreaties. So, just as the Kingdom refused to accommodate the Biden administration’s request to increase oil production last November – an apparent bid to drive down prices, thereby improving the Democrats’ chances in this year’s mid-term elections – it is likely to refuse Biden’s request today. When the Saudis increase output, it will be because doing so is in their own interest. They will not risk alienating Russia by taking America’s side. But they will not risk their own economic future, either. Saudi Arabia’s leaders have internalized the lessons of the 1970s, when high prices led to decreased demand for oil. The last thing they want is to motivate the US and its allies to accelerate the adoption of renewables. The only question is the price at which they will be motivated to act."

FYI, this morning, for the first time, the price at the station pb frequents, is $5.00/gallon.

pb fills up his tank about once every 500 miles or so. It's been neatly a month since pb filled up...in Delaware for about $4.30.
