(NY TIMES) WASHINGTON — Some House and Senate Democrats, smarting from a move by Senator Joe Manchin III, Democrat of West Virginia, to kill a major element of President Biden’s climate plan, are switching to Plan B: a tax on carbon dioxide pollution.

As previously discussed here, Greenpeace calling for end to carbon offsets. A carbon tax goes hand-in-hand in carbon offsets. Carbon offsets are of negligible value and riddled with loopholes and unintended consequences

Depends on the way it's set up. But a carbon tax isn't going to stop CO2 from rising exponentially as it is right now. We need to stop burning carbon period, which Manchin would also be opposed to.

In his demands? What other demands is he right about?

Manchin's demands are that clean energy initiatives be removed from the budget bill. Obviously there is nothing wrong with clean energy (other than storage issues) and as obviously coal should (and will) go the way of kerosene lamps and buggy whips. But coal's demise should, like kerosene lamps and buggy whips, be the result of better technology and customer preference without governmental intervention.

The other parts of the Build Back Better agenda includes initiatives like child care and free two-year college that would be appreciated quickly and help in the next elections. Climate change policy won't make an appreciable or possibly any improvements that might help Democrats in the next elections.

Manchin: "Now they're wanting to pay companies to do what they're already doing
It makes no sense at all for us to take billions of dollars and pay utilities for what they're going to do as the market transitions."

Tina Smith (D, MN): "What Manchin is saying is just not right. In fact what we're doing is we're providing utilities with support, so that they can add clean power without raising utility rates."
