The resolution — which the chamber cleared in a 396-23 vote — took aim at colleges that have been embroiled in controversy over responses to the Israel-Hamas war, declaring that the support of Hamas and Hezbollah on campuses “may lead to the creation of a hostile environment for Jewish students, faculty, and staff.”

It also calls on campus administrators to condemn antisemitism on college campuses; ensure Jewish faculty, students and guests are able to exercise free speech rights guaranteed to others without intimidation; and urges the enforcement of federal civil rights laws meant to protect Jewish students.

The resolution itself is curious to me. It attacks what's going on on college campuses more than actual bigotry. I would not have written such a Resolution this way but...

...were I a House member, I probably would have voted for it, reluctantly.

Thomas Massie, the only GOP to vote against it, argues that it's an attack on the First Amendment. It's close on that point.

Curt's said, "But pb. But pb. Rights are not absolute," and he's right. The issue is how easily one limits liberty. Curt does that more easily than pb.

I'm curious. po and Donna suggest that they're merely concerned about the Palestinian people and that they aren't antisemitic. I doubt that. I challenge them come back to SS and splain how they'd'a voted, and why.

I'm like you. Is this a first amendment violation??? If not, it comes pretty close. AND I'm wondering if it will pass the senate. I think it's interesting that it names the terrorist organizations. In my memory, this is the first time since WWII that we've actually named an enemy of the state in a limitation of 1A. And it's pretty weird that we have to. That the people of the US support someone that wants the complete eradication of the US.

If I'm reading this correctly, supporting Palestine is not an issue (although it's intrinsically linked). So there's a lot of failures in this law, to prevent hate crimes.

    MOVING FORWARD:
I think what would help far more, is for the administration to have a stance directly speaking to crimes of antisemitic hatred. So far, all they've done is wrap it into the whole "can't we all just get along" narrative. That's not helping. At all. The antisemitics are being enticed to attack Jews, or anyone supporting Israel and nothing is done about it.

I would venture to say this would be quite different if they were attacking their other hated groups. There's a mixed bag between Sharia Law and LGBTQ+ rights as one of those, which people in Gaza and the Golon Heights support. Legally though, it's a mixed bag of old British law (which allows lesbians but not gay men and other oddities. With many of those on Gaza being twelvers*, it's an issue.

*Discussed in a few other posts.

Did Speaker Mike Johnson and the House Republicans clear this with Donald Trump? "You know, Hezbollah is very smart," Trump said. "They’re all very smart."

    Baha Curt.

I think that Johnson has quickly established himself as an anti-Trump within the GOP.
