Donna,
Again I offer information that probably won't cheer you up.
A few years ago I was running several miles along the Pacific Crest trail with my friend and doctor when we started talking about our mortality. I mentioned that while I am very physically fit and live a healthy lifestyle so I have the probability of longer than average lifespan, that doesn't change my odds of having a slow degenerative decline in my final years.
My friend said that besides Oregon's Death with Dignity law, he mentioned the "virtues" of bedsores. Bedsores, left untreated, kill elderly patients relatively quickly. Also my friend has spoken of pneumonia which he and other doctors refer to as the "old man's best friend" as it ends the life of many suffering with cancer and other terminal diseases.

Probably the most painless way to die is a bullet to the back of the head. It's a little messy though.
Speaking of the horrors of getting old, about 20 minutes ago I got a text message from my cousin informing me that they had to put her mom (my aunt, who I think is about 90) in hospice because she lost the ability to swallow well and developed aspiration pneumonia. She asked me to notify my mom, who's her mom's sis-in-law.
