This is the front page banner headline of the Washington Post. Seriously, Brits are shocked? She was 96. What did they expect? Hard to believe it was unanticipated.

Maybe I've become a curmudgeon as I just turned 70. Both my wife and I were annoyed by the constant coverage of the Queen's death--by the US media. We have news about Americans and America they could report. Not that I have any ill will toward the late monarch. It appears that she took her role and duty serious and did her best.

How many little girls fantasize about being a princess? This is perfectly understandable.

Elizabeth is perceived as being a stabilizing force across the UK. My sense, based on my familiarity with popular culture in the UK, is that she was popular in the entire realm, perhaps more in places e.g., Australia and New Zealand than in Britain itself.

And, as much as American wokesters want to deny it...HATE it...she represents our Anglo-Saxonism. Whiteness still dominates the American identity. So does her sort of devoted Christianity.

Americans' affection for Queen Elizabeth is a function of that.

Your annoyance says something about you, and our entire woke subculture.

Before anyone goes bonkers with pb, let me just say this about that, and let me make this perfectly clear:

pb doesn't think that this is a good thing. But, the overwhelming fascination with the Queen's death...especially the TV coverage reflects the reality that Americans are watching. Ratings for events connected to the British royal family are high...always.

Our whiteness hasn't rubbed off. Much of America is still tenaciously WASP...to our core.

America's WASPs as a demographic have been steadily losing their grip on everything America for decades, which is why all the gnashing of teeth in the form of MAGAism. Trump the grifter was savy enough to use that as a vehicle to the presidency, which is lost on the MAGAs themselves. They've lost their grip not only of everything America, but of common sense and reality itself.

To the Queen thing: Dead at 96. What a shocker. I dread the next 10 days of 24/7 dead Queen coverage.

In a better world, she would be cremated and that would be the end of it.

Suffice to day that I'm not a fan of our stupid human rituals surrounding death and the reverence we show to lifeless bodies.

When I die, I want to be cremated and thrown in the garbage, because that's what it is. I guess I should probably put that in writing on an official legal document for it to be carried out, right?

I disagree, Donna. How's that? We disagree. Is this the first time ever?

America's WASPs as a demographic have been steadily losing their grip on everything America for decades, which is why all the gnashing of teeth in the form of MAGAism.

The demographics may not be as lily white as they've been. But, Brit-envy seems to be alive and well...stunningly so. I wouldn't have believed all the attention the Queen's passing has created.

I think the woke way may not be gaining the hegemony your Blue MAGA progressive SwampMedia makes it seem to you.

This obsession with the Crown says a lot, IMO. Americans are just as Europe obsessed as they were when our dads were glued to the tube watching Winston Churchill's funeral.

    Donna,
Near me is a place that does natural burials. See link. Also called "green burials". As I understand it, they plant you in the ground without embalming or a casket with the intent you will be compost soon.

The site I link to below is one of the first in the nation. A green burial appeals to me as it doesn't require a lot of fossil fuel energy. If my wife precedes me in death, I haven't worked out the details of getting her corpse to the natural burial cemetery. Do I place her in the back of the Subaru Forester? On the roof rack? The passenger seat? Maybe the trailer.

I said the woke are gaining hegemony, Hts? All I've said is that due to the the MAGA cult's overreach on some issues, they're driving away voters and that Democratic candidates are probably going to do better than prognosticators said several months ago. How much remains to be seen.
