"Americans vote against things, not for them. If Republicans want Americans to vote against Biden, they have to campaign against him, not against the FBI or the deep state or on whether Trump had the right to have boxes of classified documents in his closet." --Ben Shapiro tweet

"There is a reason Democrats are eager to keep Trump at the center of the conversation: half of independents say Trump is a major factor in their vote, and they’re breaking 4-1 for the Democrats. Republicans shouldn’t play that game. If they do, they’re cruising for a bruising." --Ben Shapiro tweet

I'd put it a little differently than Shapiro. Americans usually vote against candidates rather than for them. They will vote against the candidate who denies them the reasonable right to an abortion or to own a gun. Republicans will not be rewarded for Roe v. Wade being overturned.

Take a look at the anti-Blake Masters TV ad below. It runs frequently on AZ TV.

The GOP reeeeeeeeealy overreached on abortion. That one issue has been devastating for Blake Masters.

It the ad true? Masters opposes abortion to save the life of the mother?

  3. by Donna on September 1, 2022 11:35 am

As of sometime in August, Masters has come out in favor of allowing abortion when the mother's life is in jeopardy, which maybe is why I haven't seen that ad in the last few weeks. Prior to a few weeks ago, that ad was in heavy rotation.

As the piece below cites, Masters has recently walked back a number of his hardline stances on abortion, even to the point of scrubbing that part of his campaign's website.

In contrast, Mark Kelly's ads have consistently showed him as the reasonable and rational adult in the room.

It perplexes me that so many MAGA candidates, in purple states, are so crazy on abortion. It's an issue I never hear Trump talk about in the rallies.

"In a September 2021 interview, Masters said Congress 'should have a debate and pick a certain point and say, ‘No, we’re going to recognize, right here, federal personhood and past that, absolutely no abortions.’'"

You should know by now that I distrust every word on politifact, like you would every word of, say, Tucker...

...especially based on someone coming from an opponent.

In the original text in the Politifact article, there's a hyperlink on the word "interview" which takes you to the video where he said that. He does add "maybe they should leave some amount up to the states below them". So maybe in his mind he was alluding to cases where the mother's life would be in jeopardy - I don't know - he doesn't specify.

That part of the interview starts at the 24:00 mark at the link below. At one point he calls some pro-choice people "demonic".
